Local Support?
I was reading a certain article from a certain local sports reporter today and they were whining again about how Mr. Spurrier handles his business. Now who am I to say how sports reporting should be done? I am a no-name, over-opinionated fan that obsesses over the best football team in the country. I do take exception to the fact that it's the same person every week that puts negative articles in the news … and seemingly only about the Gamecocks.
This week they were complaining that Spurrier and the Athletics Department have let down Stephen Garcia by allowing him to go back to practice two weeks ahead of the original reinstatement date. I understand that this writer makes their money by being controversial, and that it makes fans like me pay attention to their articles, but only because we will loathe in everything they write. BUT, I would think there must be something better for them to write about rather then poor Garcia trying to practice with his team? I mean give the kid a break. Maybe let this slide under the rug and let him go about his business of being a student/athlete. He has undergone counseling, submitted drug and alcohol testing and performed community service to make up for his numerous mistakes, and yes, I understand he has made many mistakes by the way. Let’s see how he does and then if he screws it all up and gets kicked out of school, let’s take out a full page ad that will totally kill what’s left of any human dignity the kid has left.
I am sure that this sports reporter never made mistakes when they were a 19-year-old college freshman. Maybe they didn’t have a microscope on them with jealous reporters publicly lambasting them for everything they do. I am certainly glad I didn't have the types of pressure and expectations on me when I was a college student. No excuses, Garcia has definitely made some bad judgment calls, but who hasn’t? How about we go back to reporting on the Gamecocks football team instead of a player who hasn't even played a down?
