South Carolina Gets Letter Of Inquiry, But Chris Culliver Is Cleared To Play UGA
Wonderful.South Carolina is now legit enough to take place in the Spanish Inquisition. I mean, NCAA investigations. While many people saw this coming due to the hotel-gate incident and Weslye "The Cancer" Saunders abhorrent behavior, many fans are now panicking. Once again, don't worry. This letter means that the investigation is still ongoing with the University. That's all. Currently, no new developments have cropped up.Georgia received a letter of inquiry regarding A.J. Green in July, Tennessee fully expects to receive one, Alabama got a "preliminary" letter, and the world keeps on spinning. That is not to say that new issues will not arise from this. The entire reason the Whitney Hotel situation is what it is, because the NCAA came to investigate Saunders, and from there, they found out about the living situation. Many media outlets are turning it into more than it is. The coaches expected it. This is no shock. While the investigation does hold a cloud over the heads of the program, coach Spurrier will have the players focused and ready to play.Say what you will about Steve Spurrier, but in 20 years of coaching, he has never been investigated, or ran anything other then a by-the-books ship. Many people may have had problems with his personality or running up the score at Florida, but no one can deny he is a fairly clean human being (on the surface, of course). One bright spot... Chris Culliver has been cleared to play Saturday against Georgia. Read more South Carolina Football news on BleacherReport.com

Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks Home Favorites Over Georgia Bulldogs
A key SEC showdown will take place this weekend when the No. 22-ranked Georgia Bulldogs clash with the No. 24-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. Georgia romped to a 55-7 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend, while the Gamecocks dominated Southern Miss from start to finish in a 41-13 win. South Carolina has lost four straight games at home against Georgia and the Bulldogs have taken seven of the past eight meetings overall. The college football lines makers have listed the Gamecocks are a 3.5-point favorite.
Georgia returns 10 starters on offense from a year ago, but the one new starter is quarterback Aaron Murray. The redshirt freshman was impressive in his debut for the Bulldogs, throwing for 160 yards and three touchdowns versus the over-matched Rajun’ Cajuns. Head coach Mark Richt kept the play calling simple as most of the completions went for minimal gains. Murray added another 42 yards rushing and another score. UGA racked up 184 yards on the ground as a team. Carlton Thomas led all running backs with 61 yards and veteran Caleb King went for 47 yards plus a touchdown. The Dawgs will once again be without big play wide receiver AJ Green against South Carolina. The NCAA ruled he must sit out an additional three games for selling a game jersey worn last year. Kris Durham will try to pick up some of the lost production. He had a team-high five catches for 83 yards and a score in the opener. Converted quarterback Logan Gray also got into the scoring column. Special teams are a real strength for this team and could play a key role in a hostile environment. Drew Butler was last season’s Ray Guy award winner and Blair Walsh was a Second Team All-SEC selection.
The ol' ball coach’s first game of the 2010 season went according to plan for the Gamecocks. They flexed their muscle and showcased overall talent to kick-off the college football season. Stephen Garcia was a game-time decision to start at quarterback and proved the right decision was made for at least one game. The senior threw for 193 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns. Spurrier is very high on Connor Shaw at back-up and don’t be shocked to see him used in his game if Garcia struggles. Running back Marcus Lattimore finally made his long-awaited debut for South Carolina. Recruiting services ranked him as the top running back coming out of high school. He rushed for 54 yards and two scores last Thursday. Sophomore wide receiver Alshon Jeffery seems to have made great strides into becoming an elite player at his position in the SEC. The lanky Jeffery caught seven passes for 106 yards. The Cocks will play without tight end Wesley Saunders once again with his ultimate status being determined at a later date.
The public is betting heavy on South Carolina in this matchup. It has been one of the largest line movements of the weekend. This most likely has to do with the lengthened suspension of Green and a young quarterback playing in front of a hostile environment for the first time. Georgia has dominated recently though and they seem to have South Carolina’s number. I think they will be able to run the ball well enough to stay close and possibly sneak out of Columbia with a victory.
Play: Georgia +3.5

College Football: Five Keys To A South Carolina Victory Over Georgia
This is the first big SEC game of the season. Number 24 South Carolina is visited by the number 22 Georgia Bulldogs. Could FIRST in the SEC East be at stake?Everything is a question mark with Florida's shaky play in week one. Georgia looked good against a terrible Louisiana Lafayette team, and South Carolina looked good against a pre-season hyped conference USA team. Either way, this game will answer alot of questions about the two teams.
Position South Carolina Advantage Even Georgia Advantage

Running Backs/Fullbacks X
Wide Receivers X
Offensive Line X
Defensive Line X

South Carolina has the more veteran quarterback, and without A.J. Green, South Carolina has the better collection of wide receivers. Georgia has a powerful running game. This could be a high scoring game, following the trend started last year. Here are five keys to a Carolina victory.1. Stop the Georgia rushing attack. This seems like a "no duh" statement. However, it implies bigger things. If you can keep Georgia's running backs from finding space, the pressure falls on the shoulders of Aaron Murray, a true freshman quarterback starting his first SEC game in a hostile SEC environment. He will be a great QB, but it is too early to put that much pressure on him, especially against a good South Carolina defense. South Carolina held the Southern Miss passing attack (which was very good last year) to 200 yards until the fourth quarter and the game was over.2. Win the turnover battle. Last week, Stephen Garcia played a smart game. He never threw it into bad spots, and he tucked and ran when appropriate. This has to happen again for South Carolina to win. Also, the defense needs to get to Murray early and often. Rattle him and have him throw a pick or two, and this game could become a rout.3. Feed the freshmen. Ace Sanders and Marcus Lattimore are not your average freshmen. They are game changing stars, and need to be accounted for. If they get going early, look for Garcia to take even more deep shots to star receiver Alshon Jefferey. South Carolina has more weapons on this team then on any they have ever had. They must utilize all of them.4. Continue with the unique play calling. Last week, South Carolina revealed many formations and wrinkles to the offense. You saw the wildcock, you saw a Connor Shaw package, you saw two running backs, and you saw the standard offense.Southern Miss didn't know what hit them, and Steve Spurrier looked like the offensive genius he is.5. Find some way to pressure the quarterback. Last week, the front four got a few hurries, but only one sack. Cliff Matthews must have a greater impact on this Saturday's game. With pressure, comes mistakes. As stated above, Aaron Murray can't do it alone, and if he gets rattled, he could have a rough day. Overall, I think this will be another close barn burner. Carolina is favored by 2.5, and 4 out of the 5 CBS sportsline experts predict a South Carolina victory. I am with them on that one.Prediction- South Carolina 35- Georgia 21. A close game that will be around 28-21 until South Carolina puts it away with a late touchdown. SEC Football Week 1 Wrap Up: 'Dawgs, Vols, and Tide Roll, Upset in Oxford
Week one of the college football season is complete and Jody Alberson is here to wrap up all the action that took place in the SEC. First, let’s hand out some superlatives for week one. Player of the Week: QB Cameron Newton, Auburn Newton racked up 357 yards of total offense and added five TDs (two ru.TDs). Freshman of the Week: QB Tyler Russell, Miss. St. Russell completed 81 percent of his passes for 256 yards and four TDs. Game Recaps First up, the game of the week featuring LSU and North Carolina in the Chik-fil-A Kickoff Classic. This much hyped battle between the SEC/ACC looked to be a blow out early, as we learned that UNC would be without 13 players, including seven starters. LSU took advantage and had a 30-10 lead heading into halftime. LSU was led by an incredible effort by Patrick Peterson in the return game, accumulating 257 yards and one TD. The Tarheels were able to fight their way back in the game, led by Senior QB T.J. Yates. LSU fumbled away the big lead and gave the Tarheels a chance to win it from the LSU six yard line. Yates pass to Zack Pianalto fell incomplete, leaving the LSU Tigers victorious in week one by a final score of LSU 30, UNC 24. In our upset alert, USC was able to take care of the Southern Miss. Eagles, cruising to a 41-13 victory. The Gamecocks much maligned QB Stephen Garcia cemented his hold on the starting job, completing 69 percent of his passes for 193 yards and adding 38 yards rushing and two TDs. Freshman RB Marcus Lattimore looked impressive in his Gamecock debut, leading all rushers with 54 yards on 14 carries with two TDs. Lattimore exhibited a knack for finding the hole and bursting through for positive yards on every carry. Sophomore WR Alshon Jeffery also put up big numbers catching seven passes for 106 yards. Joker Phillips was able to secure a victory in his head coaching debut for Kentucky, as the Wildcats defeated the Louisville Cardinals by a score of 23-16. Alabama cruised to a victory over San Jose State, 48-3 without Heisman Trophy winning RB Mark Ingram. Next up for ‘Bama is Penn State. QB Ryan Mallett threw for 301 yards and three TDs in Arkansas’ 44-3 victory over Tennessee Tech. Auburn defeated Arkansas St 52-26 and were led by Cameron Newton’s 357 yards of total offense and five TDs. Is it troubling that the Tigers gave up 26 points to Arky St?Florida did not look impressive in the post-Tebow era. Center to QB exchange issues kept the game closer than many fans would have liked but Miami (OH)’s inability to capitalize on the Gators’ mistakes spelled their defeat. Gators 34, Redhawks 12. Georgia was without their lead returning rusher (Washaun Ealey) and receiver (AJ Green) from a year ago but still managed a 55-7 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. The ‘Dawgs true test will come when they travel to Columbia in week two to face the ‘Cocks. In the big upset of the weekend, Jacksonville St stunned Ole Miss in a 2-OT victory in Oxford. The Rebels cruised out to a 31-10 lead at the half under QB Nathan Stanley. QB Jerimiah Masoli entered the game for what was supposed to be mop-up duty, but the Gamecocks had a different plan. JSU scored 24 points in the second half, including a TD and 2-point conversion with less than twenty seconds on the clock. Both teams scored a TD and converted the PAT in the first overtime. Ole Miss went ahead by seven in double overtime. JSU converted a TD on 4th and 15 from the Ole Miss 30 yard line to come within one. In a gutsy move, JSU went for two and converted for the 49-48 upset over the Rebels. Now I’m not saying Ole Miss Head Coach Houston Nutt should worry after one game, but losing to a FCS school, after a disappointing season a year ago…if he doesn’t pull it together, Nutt could be unemployed by season’s end. Mississippi State, under second year head coach Dan Mullen, defeated Memphis 49-7. The Bulldogs compiled 569 yards of total offense en route to the decisive victory. The Derek Dooley era in Knoxville got under way with a 50-0 victory over Tennessee-Martin. Tennessee was led offensively by the ground attack of Tauren Poole. Poole rushed form 110 yards on 17 carries with two TDs. Last, in the “Battle of the Brainiacs”…Northwestern defeated Vanderbilt 23-21 in Robbie Caldwell’s debut as head coach of the Commodores. South Carolina Football: Four Adjustments Gamecocks Must Make After Week One

While those things may be possible, they will not be possible without these four key adjustments. The defensive strategy of the Gamecocks paid off against Southern Miss, but it likely won't against the teams from the SEC. At least not as it was executed against Southern Miss. Southern Miss didn't put up many points, but they put up more yards than some Gamecock fans were comfortable with. The tempo of the game needs to be dictated by South Carolina, and there are things they can do to make that happen. So without further ado, these are the four adjustments South Carolina must make to become a contender in the SEC.Begin Slideshow
